Το NATO ανακοίνωσε ότι θα αναπτύξει τέσσερα πολυεθνικά τάγματα στην Πολωνία και στις χώρες της Βαλτικής, τα οποία θα τελούν υπό τη διοίκηση των ΗΠΑ, του Καναδά, της Γερμανίας και της Βρετανίας αντίστοιχα.

Lithuania Hopes for Energy Independence, Security With New LNG Terminal

Lithuania's liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal "Independence" is a geopolitical project that will lead to energy independence and security of the whole Baltic region, Lithuania's president said at the official ceremony of welcoming the off-shore liquefied natural gas vessel Independence in the port of Klaipeda.

"Klaipeda's LNG terminal will cover almost 90 percent of gas needs of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia," Dalia Grybauskaite, Lithuania's president, said at the ceremony.

"Lithuania has managed to build the terminal alone. It took just three and a half years to implement the project. We have become a secure state in what concerns energy. It [the terminal] will become a guarantor of energy security for the whole Baltic region. We will always be able to help our neighbors in case they need it," the president said, adding that Lithuania will no longer be dependent on the "imposed gas prices".

Independence storage-vessel for the LNG terminal has the capacity of 170,000 cubic meters (approximately 6 billion cubic feet), and is leased by the state-owned energy terminal operator Klaipedos Nafta AB from Norway's Hoegh LNG Holdings liquefied natural gas services provider for the period of 10 years. Lithuania also has a contract with Norway's oil and gas company Statoil ASA to supply the terminal with LNG for five years at the prices comparable to Russian energy giant Gazprom's export to the country after this year's price reduction, according to Lithuania's Energy Minister Rokas Masiulis.

The first delivery of LNG is scheduled for Tuesday.

Russia and Finland Sign Icebreaker Deal for Baltic Sea

Russia and Finland have signed an agreement on the provision of mutual icebreaking services in a bid to improve navigation in the eastern Gulf of Finland.

The new rules will allow Finnish icebreakers to operate in Russian territorial waters in return for financial compensation, said a statement posted Monday on the Finnish Transportation Ministry website.

In accordance with the agreement, Russian icebreakers will also help ships at Finnish ports, though all operations in territorial waters will be subject to prior approval.

Russian Transportation Minister Sergei Aristov and his Finnish counterpart Harri Pursiainen were prompted to sign the icebreaking accord following a particularly harsh winter in 2010 when conditions in the gulf were tough, said a statement on the Russian ministry's website.

The transportation ministers also signed an amendment to an existing road transport agreement that will allow Russian transport operators to carry higher weights in Finland, the statement added.
The Gulf of Finland is the easternmost part of the Baltic Sea and borders Russia, Estonia and Finland.

Danish divers launch mission to remove oil from a ten-year-old wreck

Danish divers have launched a major operation in the Baltic Sea in a bid to avert an environmental disaster.

They are trying to remove hundreds of cubic metres of fuel oil which are still on board a Chinese cargo ship which sank ten years ago.


It's a dangerous mission for the specialist divers who are having to work in depths of around 70 metres to locate the fuel tanks which have corroded and are in danger of leaking.

The Baltic Sea can be very rough and the operation which depends on calm waters could take up to a month to complete.
