Russia’s Foton-M Satellite Landing Scheduled for September 1 (Space Agency)

MOSCOW, September 1 (RIA Novosti) – The landing of Russia’s Foton-M biosatellite with geckos, fruit flies, silkworm eggs, mushrooms and seeds of higher plants on board is appointed for the Knowledge Day, September 1, in the Orenburg region, Russia’s Federal Space Agency Roscosmos told RIA Novosti.

"The program of scientific experiments has been completed. The State Commission decided to land Foton-M at 13.18 (9:18 GMT) on September 1 in the Orenburg region," according to the statement.

The biological mission of the Foton-M satellite included eight experiments. The experiments involving five geckos were to monitor their reproductive activity in space. The mission was also to study the effect of weightlessness on plants and insects, and to conduct experiments on the growth of semiconductor crystals.

Experts make efforts to restore communication with Foton-M research satellite

Experts have been trying to restore communication with the Foton-M research satellite that so far fails to receive commands from the Earth, the Mission Control Centre (MCC) outside Moscow told Itar-Tass on Thursday. 

“We currently receive telemetric data from Foton, however, we cannot transmit commands from the Earth to the satellite so far, that is we have only one-way connection. Experts are now trying to restore the communication.”


Russia launched its fourth Foton-M research satellite last Friday to begin a sixty-day mission for an array of creatures and biological experiments. Liftoff atop a Soyuz-2-1a rocket from the Baikonur cosmodrome occurred at 02:50 a.m., local time on July 18.

Le bio satellite Foton-M avec des organismes vivant à son bord lancé depuis le Baïkonour

La fusée Soyouz-2.1a, décollée depuis le cosmodrome de Baïkonour dans la nuit du samedi, a mis en orbite l’appareil spatial Foton-M № 4, à bord duquel se trouvent cinq geckos, des mouches drosophiles, des micro-organismes et des graines de plantes supérieures.

L’appareil restera en orbite pendant 60 jours. Pendant le vol orbital, 20 expériences seront effectuées à bord du Foton-M.


Précédemment, le directeur adjoint de l'Institut des problèmes biomédicaux de l'Académie des sciences de Russie, Vladimir Sytchev a indiqué que des expériences menées aideraient à savoir plus sur les effets que l’homme ressent en apesanteur.

Ο επιστημονικός εξοπλισμός στον δορυφόρο «Bion-M1» ενεργοποιήθηκε και λειτουργεί κανονικά, ενώ οι «επιβάτες» της συσκευής – μογγολικοί γερβίλοι, ποντίκια – για πρώτη φορά μετά την εκτόξευση έλαβαν τροφή, ανέφερε ο αναπληρωτής του επιστημονικού διευθυντή της αποστολής καθηγητής Γιεβγκένι Ιλίν.

Ο δορυφόρος «Bion-M1», η πρώτη από το 2007 ρωσική συσκευή βιολογικών ερευνών στο διάστημα, εκτοξεύθηκε σήμερα Παρασκευή από το κοσμοδρόμιο του Μπαϊκονούρ. 

 

Στον δορυφόρο βρίσκονται περίπου εκατό διαφορετικοί ζωντανοί οργανισμοί και σπόροι φυτών. 

 

Στη διάρκεια της πτήσης διάρκειας ενός μήνα στον δορυφόρο θα πραγματοποιηθούν βιοτεχνολογικά πειράματα, για παράδειγμα, η ανάπτυξη κρυστάλλων πρωτεΐνης.

• Russia Launches Animals Into Space on One-Month Journey

An intrepid critter crew of geckos, mice and gerbils and other animals launched into orbit Friday (April 19) to begin a month-long Russian experiment to study how space travel affects living creatures. The space mission, scientists assure, will return the animals to Earth alive.
The new animal astronauts launched into orbit at 6 a.m. EDT (1000 GMT) atop a Russian-built Soyuz 2 rocket that lifted off from Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, in Central Asia.
The rocket carried the Bion-M1 space capsule, which is filled with enclosures for 45 mice, eight Mongolian gerbils, 15 geckos and numerous other species. They are expected to spend a month in orbit, flying 357 miles (575 kilometers) above Earth while scientists on the ground monitor the health of the capsule's passengers.
