UK opens new Antarctic station

The UK has officially opened its newest Antarctic research station, which replaces a former station Halley 5. 

This was due to concerns that ice under the 20-year-old former station could break in the future.


 The new research station is already operational, and is fully relocatable. 

The British government established its first Antarctic station in 1944 as part of Operation Tabarin. Currently the country has six stations on the Brunt Ice Shelf.

Argentina protests renaming part of Antarctica in honour of Queen

The Argentine Foreign Ministry has summoned the British Ambassador and handed him a formal note of protest against renaming part of Antarctica in honour of Queen Elizabeth II.


Buenos Aires has totally rejected London’s claims to that part of the sixth continent, which is better known in the UK as the British Antarctic Territory, and insists that it is Argentine territory.


Last week, London renamed the area of more than 430,000 square kilometres in honour of Queen Elizabeth II.

Under the 1961 international treaty on the sovereignty of Antarctica, the sixth continent does not belong to any world nation, which means that the name Queen Elizabeth Land will appear on British maps only.

Στην Αργεντινή οι ενέργειες της Βρετανίας έχουν ονομαστεί εκδήλωση ιμπεριαλιστικών φιλοδοξιών.
