Abnormality found on China's moon rover (video CCTV)

Chinese scientists are preparing to overhaul its moon rover "Yutu", after an abnormality was detected as it went dormant.

The information was revealed by the country’s State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defence on Saturday.

It specified that the abnormity occurred due to "the complicated lunar surface environment", without giving further details. Chang’e-3 and the moon rover finished their work for a second lunar day, and both entered a lunar night mode.

The abnormality emerged before the rover went into dormancy at dawn on Saturday, as the lunar night fell. Chang’e-3 successfully landed on moon on December 14th last year.

China releases photos taken by Chang'e-3

China has released its latest photos of the lunar landscape, taken by its Chang'e-3 lunar probe.

Photo taken by the panoramic camera on the Yutu moon rover on Dec. 22, 2013 shows the Chang'
e-3 moon lander during Chang'e-3 lunar probe mission's first lunar day circle.

One of the pictures shows the first official photo of the earth taken by the lander’s landform camera. The moonscape around the Yutu rover was captured by the panoramic camera. Other images show the moon’s surface, the rover, and the earth’s plasmasphere.
The pictures were taken between December 14th and 26th, during the mission’s first lunar day cycle.

This was the fifth time the rover and the lander took photos of each since they arrived eight days ago. Scientists in Beijing have been processing them and say scientific tasks can now begin.

"Ten pictures have been taken at five spots so far, and all of them are better than we expected. The rover has moved in a semi-circle around the lander. Afterwards, they will begin to conduct scientific explorations of the geography and geomorphology of the landing spot and nearby areas, and materials like minerals and elements there.

We will also explore areas 30 meters and 100 meters beneath the lunar soil. The exploration will continue longer than we planned, because all the instruments and equipments are working very well," said Wu Weiren, chief designer of China Lunar Probe Program.

Japan hopes to expand its territorial waters /Erupting island rises south of Tokyo (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

The Japanese government hopes to expand its territorial waters as a result of the occurrence of a large volcanic formation in the Pacific Ocean, which can later become a full-fledged island.

This was announced today at a press conference in Tokyo by Chief Cabinet Secretary, Esihide Suga.

“If this formation becomes a real island, the area of our territorial waters will increase”, - he said.

In the area of the newborn island, columns of ash arise to a height of about 600 meters from the water. Hot stones are been thrown in the air. The situation is being monitored by a patrolling aircraft of the Coast Guard.

A volcano eruption has raised a small islet in the sea off the Japanese coast. The Japanese Coast Guard has issued a warning as the new land mass is spitting steam, black smoke, ash and rocks.

The new island is part of the Ogasawara chain, also known as the Bonin Islands, a group of some 20 uninhabited islands located approximately 1,000 kilometres from the Japanese capital. The islet is estimated to be about 200 meters in diameter.
The new island may be eroded away just as quickly as it appeared, but it also may become a permanent part of the chain, volcanologist Hiroshi Ito, who travelled with the Coast Guard, told the FNN news network.
The eruption on Thursday is the first reported in the area since the mid-1970s. Most volcanic activity there goes undetected, because it goes on deep on the seabed along the Izu-Ogasawara-Marianas Trench.
The Japanese government is quite sensitive about the country’s territorial supremacy and have a number of border disputes with neighbours. It welcomed the unexpected addition.

2. Unrelenting snowfalls have caused unprecedented travel chaos in Russia. Over the past week the country has seen scores of traffic accidents, flight delays, and in some cases, the complete isolation of some remote settlements and towns.

As more than 10 inches of snow fell in Moscow – more than half of the average snowfall for the whole of January – the already congested city is on the verge of a traffic collapse. Traffic measuring portal Yandex reported Grade 10 (out of 10) jams on Friday, as strong winds created blizzard conditions and built imposing snow drifts.
More than 12,000 de-icers and snow sweepers are out on the streets, working around the clock.
As the city has come to a standstill the chair of the Duma’s transport committee has called for local transport officials to face legal sanctions for failing to cope with the winter weather.
“Until local bureaucrats face the wrath of the law, winter will always be a surprise occurrence. They will continue to do nothing, as people suffer,” Mikhail Bryachak told Kommersant FM radio.
Several dozen flights have been postponed at the city’s major airports, with thousands of passengers stranded, many having to stay overnight.

While in the large population centers in western Russia the snowstorms have caused inconvenience, further east they have been life threatening.
The polar circle city of Norilsk has seen snowfall build to a height of more than 10 feet, and entire apartment blocks have been barricaded by snow overnight, requiring city workers to dig passageways through the snow banks.
Meanwhile, icicles up to three feet in length have formed off every building ledge, breaking at random and causing a lethal hazard for pedestrians below.
Nearly two hundred people have died throughout Russia as a direct result of weather-related accidents and hypothermia this season, according to official statistics, although the extreme conditions have likely contributed to many more fatalities.
However, meteorologists have promised some good news: the stormy conditions are expected to recede over the weekend.
