3. Tornados Attacking in Swarms. Is Climate Change to Blame?...

Tornados are among the most frightening storms, in part because of their destructive power but also because of their unpredictability. You can track and prepare for a hurricane, but tornados strike quickly and with little warning. And unlike hurricanes, tornados have no specific season.

And if it seems to you that tornado incidents have been bigger and scarier recently, you’re right, says a team of researchers in a new study published today in Science. While it found that tornados haven’t increased in number and, in fact, the number of days on which tornados are occurring has decreased, the appearance of tornados in clusters has risen. That means if one tornado touches down, more are likely to occur in quick succession in the same geographic area. And scientists are asking if climate change is to blame..............http://ecowatch.com/2014/10/17/tornado-swarms-climate-change/

  4. Hurricane Gonzalo scores direct hit on Bermuda; Hawaii on alert...

Hurricane Gonzalo slammed directly into Bermuda on Friday, knocking out most of the electricity there as it lashed the tiny Atlantic island chain with pounding surf, torrential rains and howling winds.

The strongest storm to sweep the subtropical British territory in a decade made full landfall at about 8:30 p.m. The Category 2 hurricane was packing sustained winds of up to 110 mph (175 kph).

In the Pacific, a powerful storm churning toward Hawaii became a hurricane on Friday.

The National Weather Service said Friday that Ana became a Category 1 hurricane about 230 miles (370 km) south of Hilo with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 kph).

A tropical storm watch is in effect, but tourists and residents were making the most of sunny weather as the storm blew toward the islands.

The Hawaiian islands’ south shores are expected to get large swells churned up by Ana, with waves as high 20 feet (6 meters).

  5. Some regions in north China, as well as areas along the Yellow and Huaihe rivers, will be once again shrouded by smog starting from Saturday, according to the national observatory....

Most regions in central and east China will see haze or slight smog in the coming days, the National Meteorological Center (NMC) said. But the condition will be short-lived as a cold front is in sight to help disperse the smog.

Starting on Sunday, a cold front will sweep across China, bringing temperature drops and strong gales along the way to blow away the smog, the center said.

Meanwhile, medium to heavy rainfalls will hit the provinces of Sichuan, Shaanxi and Hubei on Saturday, according to the NMC.

  6. New Evidence Links Earthquakes to Fracking...

The evidence linking fracking to earthquakes continues to pile up.
A study by seven researchers from California, Colorado, Massachusetts, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio and the UK, The Environmental Costs and Benefits of Fracking, said “Unconventional oil and natural gas extraction enabled by horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing [fracking] is driving an economic boom with consequences described from ‘revolutionary’ to ‘disastrous.’ The reality lies somewhere in between.”

The studies findings were many, including that fracking “generates income and, done well, can reduce air pollution and even water use compared with other fossil fuels.” But it also found it can reduce investment in renewables and when done carelessly, can release toxic chemicals into the environment. It also agreed: fracking causes earthquakes................http://ecowatch.com/2014/10/16/evidence-fracking-earthquakes/

  7. Beijing marathoners don face masks to battle toxic PM2.5 smog...

Despite heavy pollution blanketing Beijing on Sunday, an international marathon went ahead with face masks and sponges among the equipment used by competitors to battle the toxic smog.

The 34th Beijing International Marathon began at Tiananmen Square with many of the tens of thousands of participants wearing face masks. The 42-km course ended at the city’s Olympic Park, on a day when buildings across Beijing disappeared into a gray-tinged mist.

“Actually, on a normal day nobody would run in such conditions,” said participant Liu Zhenyu, a computer engineer. “But the event is happening today, so what can we do?”

About 30,000 people were expected to take part in the marathon and the half-marathon. The organizing committee made 140,000 sponges available at supply stations along the marathon route so runners could “clean their skin that is exposed to the air,” the Beijing News reported.

The men’s and women’s marathon winners were both from Ethiopia. 8.

  15. EU leaders to discuss greenhouse gas emissions ...

Europe wants to agree ambitious targets ahead of next year's UN climate summit in Paris.

However, environmental groups have warned the targets will be seriously diluted because of conflicting national interests.

In 2008 the EU agreed that by 2020 carbon emissions should be cut by one fifth, while renewables and energy efficiency increased by 20% by the same date.

With the deadline expiring in six years, the EU wants new targets for 2030 and beyond so it can play a leading role at next year's critical climate change meeting.

However, the debate is set to be tougher this time.

The intervening financial crisis means there has been less investment in green energy, while Russia's involvement in Ukraine has meant that the use of natural gas is not the straightforward, cleaner option it once was...........................http://www.rte.ie/news/2014/1023/654256-greenhouse-gas-emissions/

2. EU Leaders Seek Climate Deal, Clash Over Costs ...

European leaders aimed to agree on a new decade of energy policy at an EU summit Thursday, but sharp differences over sharing the costs of cutting climate-warming gas emissions meant that securing a deal was likely to prove difficult.

The 28 member states want to set the pace for a global pact to be drawn up in Paris next year with industrial powers from Asia, North America and the rest of the world. That pact would aim to improve on two decades of stuttering cooperation and rein in carbon dioxide emissions blamed for a disruptive rise in temperatures.

  19. Statement by EU Commissionner Connie Hedegaard on 2030 agreement by European Council ...

Commenting on the agreement, Connie Hedegaard said: ''The EU climate action commissioner is very proud that the 28 EU leaders, despite economic uncertainty and other severe international crises, were able to get their act together on this pressing climate challenge.

A binding 40% CO2 reduction effort domestically in Europe is not an easy task. It can only be achieved through a major transformation in all parts of the society. That is why the EU leaders' decision to adopt the Commission's proposal is an ambitious and important step forward. Important not only to Europe and the Europeans, but also to the rest of the world. We have sent a strong signal to other big economies and all other countries: we have done our homework, now we urge you to follow Europe's example.

In order to get Europe on the right track towards a low-carbon society, it is extremely important that the leaders also accepted the renewables target binding at the EU level just as the Commission proposed. And it is good that they agreed to do more on energy efficiency, although here the Commission wanted more ambition.

But now the direction towards 2030 has been set. States, regions, municipalities, businesses, investors and citizens now all know where we are heading. This is a very good day for Europe's climate politics.''

  20. EU leaders agree CO2 emissions cut ...

EU leaders have reached a landmark deal to cut greenhouse emissions by 40% by 2030, compared with 1990 levels.

The binding decision came after heated discussions at a summit in Brussels, as some members had argued that their varied interests should be protected.

Correspondents say it could make the EU a leader again in climate policy.

The bloc also agreed to boost the use of renewable energy to 27% in the total energy mix and increase energy efficiency to at least 27%.

  23. New industry minister Yoichi Miyazawa said Thursday he will try to persuade residents near the Sendai nuclear plant in Kagoshima Prefecture why its two reactors should no longer stand idle...

“The first thing that I’d like to address is that the reactors have met the new safety standards created by the Nuclear Regulation Authority,” Miyazawa told reporters Thursday. “I’ll need to tell them that those safety standards are the strictest worldwide.”

“My job is to get the understanding of the local communities on that,” he added.

Miyazawa became industry minister Tuesday after predecessor Yuko Obuchi resigned the previous day over a political funds scandal.

Miyazawa has said he is ready to visit communities near the plant as soon as possible, because the Kagoshima Prefectural Assembly was urging Obuchi to go and meet local residents during her short-lived term in office.

On Thursday Miyazawa met with Hideo Iwakiri, the mayor of Satsumasendai, which hosts the Sendai plant, and told him that despite a change of ministers there will be no change in the policy of restarting the reactors.

The Abe administration argues that any reactors that meet the beefed-up safety standards drawn up by the NRA should be fired up to reduce the expense of importing fuel for thermal power stations.

However, it remains unclear how sellers manage to evade border inspections and bring the wildlife into China.

As the only county bordering Vietnam and Laos in Yunnan, Jiangcheng is a nine-hour drive away from the provincial capital Kunming, and the distance between the border and the county is more than 50 kilometers.

The illegal trade attracts many people to drive from Kunming, Pu'er and even other provinces.

Government vehicles were also spotted among the swarm of eaters, but it is unknown whether government employees also joined the crowd.............http://www.globaltimes.cn/content/888416.shtml

  29. A fragment of ancient Australia has been found under Vanuatu in the South Pacific, raising questions about how continents are formed, researchers say...

Experts had believed that the volcanic islands, east of Australia, were isolated from continental influence.

But a team from James Cook University says it has found tiny zircon crystals of the same age in rocks on Vanuatu and in northern Australia.

Researcher Carl Spandler said the crystals "shouldn't be there".

The tiny crystals were carried in volcanic magma, the Australian Associated Press reported, and by using the latest radiometric techniques they were dated at up to three billion years old.

Mr Spandler said that the presence of the zircon had major implications for how scientists understand how continents are made..............http://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-29797137

  30. Japan Nuclear Plant Gets Approval to Restart ...

A town in southwest Japan on Tuesday approved the restart of a nuclear power station, another step forward in Japan's fraught process of reviving an industry left idled by the Fukushima catastrophe in 2011.

Satsumasendai, a town of 100,000 that hosts the two-reactor Kyushu Electric Power Co plant, is 1,000 km (600 miles) southwest of Tokyo and has long relied on the Sendai plant for government subsidies and jobs.

Nineteen of the city's 26 assembly members voted in favor of restarting the plant while four members voted against and three abstained, a city assembly member told Reuters.

The restart is unlikely until next year, as Kyushu Electric still needs to pass operational safety checks.

All 48 of the country's nuclear reactors were gradually taken offline following Fukushima, the world's worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl in 1986............http://www.voanews.com/content/reu-japan-nuclear-plants-gets-approval-to-restart/2498834.html

  33. Unmanned US rocket Antares explodes during launch ...

An unmanned supply rocket bound for the International Space Station has exploded during its launch from the US state of Virginia.

Antares, a 14-storey rocket built by Orbital Sciences Corp, combusted seconds after leaving the seaside launch pad at Wallops Flight Facility.

The cause of the cargo ship malfunction has yet to be determined.

The initial planned launch of the spacecraft on Monday was delayed due to a sailboat in nearby waters.

The flight was expected to be the third contracted mission with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

The rocket was due to carry nearly 5,000 pounds (2,200kgs) of supplies to six astronauts aboard the International Space Station.

"We will understand what happened, hopefully soon, and we'll get things back on track," said Frank Culbertson, executive vice-president of Orbital Sciences.

"We've all seen this happen in our business before, and we've all seen the teams recover from this, and we will do the same."...........http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-29812139

    1. No hope for survivors in Sri Lanka landslide, over 100 dead ...

All hopes of finding survivors under the mud and rubble of a landslide in south-central Sri Lanka had run out by first light on Thursday, though a government minister cut the estimated death toll to more than 100 from 300 the previous night.

"I don't think there could be any survivors," Disaster Management Minister Mahinda Amaraweera told Reuters, after visiting the disaster site in the tea-plantation village of Haldummulla, 190 km (120 miles) from the capital, Colombo.

"It is about 100 people who have been buried as there were some children and some estate workers who were not at their houses at the time of the disaster," he added, explaining why the death toll could be lower than feared the day before.

However, the Disaster Management Center's last estimate for the number killed was still 300................http://www.jpost.com/Breaking-News/No-hope-for-survivors-in-Sri-Lanka-landslide-over-100-dead-380233

  36. Russian government to support Yamal LNG project ...

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin said the government will support the Yamal LNG project.

On Thursday night, Novatek’s CEO Leonid Mikhelson reported to the president on the implementation of the project.

“Due to the sanctions, of course, we have been experiencing limitations on financing the project, as Novatek is on the sanctions list,” the company’s head said. “Possible attraction of the financing from the National Wellbeing Fund will not be that large — it may make 18% of the required financing. But it is most important everyone may see the government is supporting the project.”

“We have discussed outside financing with all banks, mostly with Chinese banks, with our banks. We hope by the end of the current year we shall be able to prepare all credit documents so that in the first, in the second year, about within first six months, we could open financing from abroad. Until then, the shareholders have sufficient financial opportunities to observe the timing. The target time — year 2017 — we confirm it and will follow the objective,” he said.
