In Fukushima droht die nächste Katastrophe: Das verstrahlte Wasser könnte bald in den Pazifik fließen. Eine chemische Barriere hat sich als unwirksam erwiesen. Das radioaktiv verstrahlte Grundwasser auf dem Gelände des havarierten Atomkraftwerks Fukushima steigt in dramatischem Maße und bedroht den nahegelegenen Pazifischen Ozean. Das Wasser könne innerhalb der nächsten drei Wochen an die Oberfläche treten, meldete die japanische Tageszeitung Asahi unter Berufung auf ein Krisentreffen.
Eine von der Betreibergesellschaft Tepco in den Boden injizierte Chemikalie, die eine Barriere bilden soll, habe sich als unwirksam erwiesen. Das Grundwasser hat die Sperre dem Bericht zufolge bereits überwunden. Bei einem weiteren Anstieg des Grundwassers besteht die Gefahr, dass sich das verstrahlte Wasser ins Meer ergießt.
- Tepco muss jeden Tag 100 Tonnen Wasser abpumpen, um dessen Abfluss in den Ozean zu verhindern. Das Unternehmen weiß aber nicht, wohin diese große Menge geschafft werden soll: Die Speicher, die 380.000 Tonnen Wasser aufnehmen können, sind zu 85 Prozent gefüllt.

“You can't just leave it [disposing of radioactive waste at the plant] up to Tepco," Shinji Kinjo, head of a Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NRA) told Reuters. "Right now, we have an emergency."
Daily, 400 tons of groundwater percolates into the basements of the plant, which was decimated by the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in March 2011. The seepage mixes with water used to cool down the damaged reactors, before accumulating, and escaping out into the Pacific Ocean.
For the past two years, Tepco claimed that it managed to siphon off the excess water into specially built storage tanks, but late last month admitted that toxic water was not contained.
The energy company, which is under financial pressure after being handed an $11 billion clean-up bill for Fukushima, has simultaneously hardened the earth around the plant with a special chemical, creating an impenetrable barrier on the side of the plant adjacent to the ocean.
But the shell is not complete: the technique only works 1.8 meters below the ground and further down.
So, water continues to build up inside the plant vaults, and will eventually reach the unprotected subsoil and topsoil, as more water goes in each day than is pumped out.
"If you build a wall, of course the water is going to accumulate there. And there is no other way for the water to go but up or sideways and eventually lead to the ocean," Masashi Goto, a nuclear engineer who has worked at several Tepco plants, told Reuters. "So now, the question is how long do we have?"

Η Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO) διευκρίνισε ότι κατασκεύασε ένα πηγάδι και ότι προχώρησε στην άντληση 13 τόνων νερού από τις 14:00 ως τις 20:00 τοπική ώρα (περίπου 08:00 ως 14:00 ώρα Κύπρου).
"Είναι ένα καθήκον μας που επείγει να αντλήσουμε αυτό το υπόγειο νερό το ταχύτερο δυνατό», δήλωσε την Παρασκευή εκπρόσωπος της Tepco.
Την Τετάρτη ο Ιάπωνας πρωθυπουργός Σίνζο Άμπε ανακοίνωσε ότι οι αρχές θα έχουν περαιτέρω ανάμειξη στην διαχείριση αυτού του μολυσμένου ύδατος, η διαρροή του οποίου στην θάλασσα συνιστά, σύμφωνα με τον ίδιο, ένα «επείγον» πρόβλημα.
Η Tepco αγωνίζεται από τον Μάρτιο του 2011 να αντιμετωπίσει τις συνέπειες του δυστυχήματος στον πυρηνικό της σταθμό Φουκουσίμα Νταϊίτσι, το οποίο σημειώθηκε έπειτα από έναν πολύ ισχυρό σεισμό και κυρίως το τσουνάμι που ακολούθησε.
Το πιο σοβαρό πρόβλημα εδώ και πολλές εβδομάδες είναι να εμποδιστεί η διαρροή στον Ειρηνικό Ωκεανό αυτού του νερού, το οποίο διείσδυσε στο υπέδαφος και έχει μολυνθεί από την ραδιενέργεια στον σταθμό.
Σύμφωνα με αξιωματούχο του υπουργείου Βιομηχανίας που ερωτήθηκε την Τετάρτη από το Γαλλικό Πρακτορείο, «περίπου 300 τόνοι ύδατος διαρρέουν κάθε μέρα», όμως «δεν είναι ωστόσο βέβαιο ότι το νερό αυτό έχει μολυνθεί σε υψηλό βαθμό από ραδιενέργεια».
Η Tepco προβλέπει ότι ως τα μέσα Αυγούστου θα έχει θέσει σε λειτουργία ένα σύστημα που θα εξασφαλίζει την άντληση 100 τόνων μολυσμένου ύδατος ημερησίως, το οποίο θα φιλτράρεται και θα ανακυκλώνεται για την ψύξη των αντιδραστήρων στον σταθμό.

A food scare escalated in the country after Japan's revelations last month that tons of radioactive water had poured out of the Fukushima nuclear plant. Consumers have been demanding measures to ensure that radioactive-tainted fisheries products from the area do not enter Korea. Japan had given Korea notifications about the leak through diplomatic channels.

Radiation levels in Fukushima bay highest since measurements began - reports...

Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) has detected the highest radiation level in seawater collected in the harbor of the crippled nuclear plant in the past 15 days, Nikkei reports. The last measurement showed tritium levels at 3800 becquerels per liter.
The concentration of tritium in the harbor’s seawater has been continuously rising since May, according to Nikkei.
Earlier, Tepco admitted that an estimated 20 to 40 trillion Becquerel’s of tritium may have flowed into the Pacific Ocean since May 2011.
Tritium is a radioactive isotope of hydrogen which is produced by nuclear reactors. It is potentially dangerous if inhaled or ingested. The legal limits for Tritium in terms of becquerels per liter vary from country to country. The World Health Organization has a limit of 10,000 bq/l, but the European Union’s limit is much lower, at 100 bq/l.

A maximum level 7 was declared at the battered plant after explosions led to a loss of power and cooling two years ago, confirming Fukushima as the worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl a quarter of a century earlier.

Toxic water may be removed later Wednesday: TEPCO...

The company reported the leak on Tuesday, which led the Nuclear Regulation Authority to consider raising the severity assessment of the event to level 3 from the initial level 1. Level 3 on the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale is defined as a "serious incident."
TEPCO is currently transferring water from the tank to other tanks nearby. The utility confirmed it will be safe, adding the tanks are of the same type.

Fukushima: le typhon a fait couler de l'eau radioactive dans un fossé...
ΑπάντησηΔιαγραφήL'opérateur de la centrale accidentée de Fukushima a indiqué dans la nuit de mercredi à jeudi avoir relevé de l'eau radioactive dans un fossé menant à la mer, probablement à cause des pluies provoquées par le typhon Wipha.
Des niveaux de 1400 à 2300 becquerels par litre de rayonnements bêta (provoqués notamment par le strontium 90) ont été décelés dans de l'eau de ce fossé qui relie une zone du côté montagne où sont installés des réservoirs d'eau radioactive à l'océan Pacifique.
Le niveau de 1400 becquerels/litre a été détecté à 150 mètres environ de la mer, et les teneurs supérieures de 2000 et 2300 becquerels/litre en deux autres endroits situés plus en amont.
Il s'agit des chiffres les plus hauts jusqu'à présent mesurés en ces points où des contrôles sont effectués tous les jours.
"Nous pensons qu'à cause du typhon, la pluie a entraîné avec elle de la terre alentour souillée dans le fossé", ce qui a fait monter la radioactivité, a expliqué Tepco dans un courriel.
"Nous allons procéder au nettoyage", a ajouté la compagnie qui doit aussi vérifier quelles éventuels effets cela a pu avoir sur l'eau de mer.
Tepco avait auparavant assuré mercredi soir que les précautions adéquates avaient été prises face au passage du typhon Wipha qui a balayé le sud et l'est du Japon mardi soir et mercredi, y compris à proximité de la centrale. La compagnie avait déclaré n'avoir constaté aucun sérieux ennui, ni de changements à l'intérieur et autour de la centrale.
Toutefois, les précipitations ont dépassé les prévisions de la compagnie qui a dû relâcher dans la nature d'importantes quantités d'eau de pluie qui s'était accumulée dans les zones des réservoirs entourées de petites digues de 30 centimètres.
